About Us
We are a community run by and for Oromo refugees in Birmingham and West Midlands. We work together with all our members to build a community where we can support each other and learn from each other. In all our activities we aim to celebrate our cultural heritage, keep the Oromiffa language alive for our children and support both adults and children to flourish and have a positive future.
If you are an Oromo person living in Birmingham and West Midlands. we would love to meet you. Please get in touch, we all speak Oromiffa. Most of us came to the UK as an asylum seeker and granted refugees status, everyone had fled from violence in Ethiopia and spent many years in refugee camps. We are now working to rebuild our community after years of displacement and trauma by helping men, women and children to have the tools to establish themselves in the UK and help everyone to adjust to life in a new country.
We aim to create a safe environment for everyone from the very young to the very old. We are a small, currently on the process of registering our charity run entirely by member volunteers providing activities for our 100 members and reaching out to make connections with the wider community.
Our activities include:
- a weekly Saturday school for children;
- Refugee Women Digital Empowerment and Connect Project.
- swimming and sewing classes for women;
- an annual outing in the summer holidays;
- monthly community meals;
- football tournaments, cultural celebrations, and health activities for men.
